As if bad internet service wasn't enough...

Not only does AOL have bad internet service and allows people to spam their chat rooms with sexual predators, but now they have to try to rock the boat with this. Ok, so this may be the story from the other angle of the spectrum, the anti-AOL angle, below you will find the AOL side of things (I could not find the AOL press release stating that this tax would go into effect though, every one mentions it, no one links to it..., so yes, I am a skeptic too). So there you go, I'm not completely biased - or am I?

But in case you want to see how biased I really can be, just in case, here, here (that one also has a petition you can sign, and the "Dear AOL" site above also has a petition) and here are more websites that take the anti-AOL e-mail tax stance. After just looking at the title of a few of these sites you will notice that Yahoo! is also in on this. I have had a yahoo account since I think 1998.

Some "nicer" things about the tax found at this press release that talks about exemption for non-profits, an article briefly describing the press release. More support there.

While this thing won't work to stop spam, the market can work to stop the whitelisting scheme. (1) AOL customers who find that mail doesn't get through should complain to AOL. (2) Legitimate mailing list providers should start charging AOL customers for receiving their email or requesting that their customers use non-AOL addresses. (3) AOL customers should use an alternate Internet service, and be sure to let AOL know why they left.
