Inspired by Vito's musically-related posts, 1 & 2, I decided I would follow suit.
I play the piano. The interesting thing about this is not that I play, but that I had never played a musical instrument before this and I picked it up in college. I play ok well, I can sight-read fairly ok, but I was never a big practicer. Which, of course, catches up with you when you are playing instruments.
Whenever we would talk about practicing he would always bring up mathematics. It went something like this:
"Well, how much time do you spend on your math homework?"
"Do you really want me to answer that question...?"
"Well you have to do a lot of problems before you get really good at them, right?"
"Ummm... Well, when I learn how to do a problem, I know how to do it and then I don't really practice them anymore."
"Well music is different. You only get better by practicing."
I know that he wanted to draw parallels between the way he must have learned mathematics, through drilling and doing exercises, and the way I should apply myself to music, by practicing at least 30 minutes a day. I am a fast-learner, especially with mathematics. It is starting to slow down with topology, by the way, but I hope it becomes a little bit easier the better I get at knowing the definitions.
