What is the world coming to?

While checking my gmail, the sponsored links at the top showed this story.

Interesting things about the story I thought: (1) they are in 2nd and 3rd grade! When I was in 2nd and 3rd grade we didn't know much about anything like that, what are they teaching kids nowadays that gives them those ideas? (2) This is at an accelerated school, wow. That doesn't comfort me about sending my kids someday (eventually, a long time from now when I do have kids) to a good school, or what I think might be a good school. I mean, crime can happen anywhere so your kids aren't "safe" anywhere, heck look at this story. But I think these things can be avoided. Who knows... what is this world coming to?

What do you think about this?

Your title reflects my reaction when I saw this story. Yes, we can blame teachers for not paying attention. However, this is a reflection of what is going on in our society. These boys were just mimicking adults because they were not by their parents what is right and what is wrong. I have taught at the middle school for four years and have seen a lot of kids who had more sexual experience that I did; my first year, a 5th grader had a baby. It's horrible and there is no way we can turn things around overnight. However, we need to teach our own kids and fight for increased parental involvement. Which reminds me of another story... some school systems do not want parents to know about clubs offered to students. What do you think of that?

We have no idea what happened. Today, we're more willing to describe certain conduct as "sexual assault," "sexual harrassment" or "sexual misconduct," when the kids involved have no idea what any of the terms mean. Before, it would have been described as "bullying" or "fighting."

While this case is more serious, since there was physical violence involved, it is similar in concept to the case of the kindergartener who was suspended for "sexual harrassment" for kissing a girl in his class. Just because something appears "sexual" to an adult, doesn't mean it is to a child.
