I'm very artistic. One time I went to a retreat, it was a very spiritual retreat and I got a lot of benefit from attending it. Near the beginning, they gave each of us a cup and told us to decorate it. I made "star angels" on mine in the middle of clouds and put numbers all over the place and decorated it really nicely.
Well, somewhere later in the retreat we were talking about each other, only positive things of course, and one of the staff people for my group said something to the effect of, "for a math person, I wasn't expecting you to be so artistic with your cup".
Some of the math-related people who read my blog may be asking themselves at this point, "what is that supposed to mean?" I think it's a fallacy to say mathematicians are not artistic, but it is true to say the sterotype is not artistic. Yes, people don't generally fit this false sterotype to begin with, but I guess this is just one way I am breaking people's perceptions of mathematicians.
So back to me - I love to paint and draw. I love color and shape. Just overall, I really love to take a canvass and fill it up with something. Painting is really an outlet for me. I'll never say I am good at it, but I am not really going for artistic value but just to get my vision out on the table. Putting it out there is all I want, nothing more (but if I painted something and someone wanted to pay me an immense amount of money, I do not think I would complain at all!).
So if you have any random art supplies just laying around, send them my way ;). They will be put to good use.
