I know that about a month ago I promised Categories...
I've been debating. Although I really like the idea of having categories there are:
1) A few things I'd like a little more
2) Lots of things on the sidebar
3) Lots of Categories to make, so I have no idea where to begin anymore.
So, after thinking about using del.icio.us and/or Technorati (although, when I look back at it, I have no idea why I thought Technorati could help me with categories), I think I'll stick to doing it manually.
Any suggestions for categories from what you've read on the site?
I'm thinking:
- Identity
- Finances
- Small U
- Wedding
- Grad School
- Math and Me
Or something like that. I'm not sure that every post will fit into one or a few of those categories, and I don't know that it matters. Those who have categories, does that matter to you? Making your post fit a mold, even if it's not semi-perfect?
What makes this post a rant? Well, here's where the post takes a turn for the worst.
Why does Blogger insist on not having categories? The most wanted feature for those wanting to increase their blog traffic? I will not say this article is the authority on building a better blog, but I certainly feel like it's a good list to start off with. What's number 1? Using categories. I really do like blogger, but they have to make some hacks more accessible and hook up with some company that can do categories for you.
Del.icio.us is good, but I hate the idea of making an account just for the purpose of putting my pages in categories. The problem with it? I'm coming up with too many categories. I have honestly thought about printing out every page and filing them together to see what the smallest amount of files I'd have to make would be. But, this would be a very large waste of paper and I don't know if I could live with myself afterwards. This is also way too much time to put into one facet of the site, or maybe it's not.
If I want to talk about time, maybe I should wait until Blogger finally answers the call and puts categories together. Why do today what you can put off 'til tomorrow?*
*Part of the Procrastinator's Creed, I think. I'm not really saying that, but it would be nice if Blogger put something up. C'mon guys, you aren't part of google for your inability to think up great ideas and put them into action, are you? No. Make the code, work with me, plz.

Depends on why you want categories. If you want actual organization, they may be useful. If you want people to be able to navigate within your site, the Blogger navbar already includes a Google-based internal search mechanism, which is much more powerful than categorization. If you just want people to be able to find you from off your blog based on easy search terms, then Technorati tags are probably the way to go. (You don't need a Technorati account, but, if you don't have one, it makes it a few steps harder to see your own stats). If your blog posting is announced to weblogs.com (it's in the Blogger dashboard), then your posts will automatically be tagged via Technorati.
Incidentally, I added tags for the latter reason, and as far as I can tell, I haven't gotten a single hit from a Technorati page. But, it's also possible that my choices of tags aren't very good or that my content is not of general interest.
