Oh my gosh, I think I went through an entire semester's worth of algebra in one hour. I don't think he understood a lot of it either, which sucks.
But I'm officially getting paid $20/hr anyways.
We started off with graphing, plotting points and learning about the four quadrants. Then we moved on to graphing lines and open and closed segments. We talked about slopes and slope-intercept form and then I found out that he has a problem with simplifying equations, really just dividing by negatives (only sometimes).
Then we worked on combining like terms and, since his mom mentioned that he had studied quadratic equations, we worked on factoring for a little while.
At least now he knows how to check some of his work. I really hope that he does the homework I assigned him because the homework that I assigned him last time? Well, he only completed about 1/5th of it.
It's ok, he'll pick up on it soon. I'm sure of it. He's a bright kid and by connecting part of what he wants to do, be a pilot, with mathematics, slowly but surely he's getting interested.
